The earthquake in Pakistan
in November 2005 killed more than 70,000 people, destroyed and damaged over
600,000 houses, and left 1.5 million people homeless. The Government of Pakistan
responded to this epic natural disaster with the establishment of a specialized
institution, the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Agency (ERRA)
under the Office of the Prime Minister.
In August 2006, UNHCR
tasked IASCI to identify gaps in information management in the earthquake relief
and reconstruction programmes and to design the concept of an information
clearinghouse under the auspices of ERRA.
As an integral part of the
ERRA Monitoring and Evaluation Wing, ERRA-INFOCH supports the Government of
Pakistan, Donors, UN system, and authorized civil society actors by means of:
- Collated and relevant
baseline information, disseminated between Central authorities in Islamabad and
their partners in the earthquake –affected areas in the North-western Frontier
Province (NWFP) and Kashmir (AJ&K);
- Verification of the
status of projects and programmes;
- Support for informed
and coordinated planning and decision-making for rehabilitation, reconstruction
and development initiatives
At present (Phase II),
IASCI has 32 staff members in Pakistan operating the project in 9 offices,
covering the entire earthquake-affected area of Pakistan. The project is
currently funded by UNHCR, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation
(SDC).
