Mother and Child Healthcare Education Programme in Sri Lanka

Country:          Sri Lanka

Time frame:      01 February 2007 – 31 September 2008

Partners:         Caritas Austria, Austrian Medical Chamber, Austrian Ministry of Health, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka

The District of Nuvara Eliya due to a variety of complex social reasons represents one of the Districts in Sri Lanka with the highest maternal and infant death rates. IASCI has been requested by the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka and Caritas Austria to act as implementing partner to address this concern. Following detailed assessments by IASCI the project will focus on extensive training of public health midwives, health volunteer workers and medical staff in Nuwara Eliya on specific issues of mother and child care. Additionally educational materials for pregnant women and their families will be produced in all relevant languages addressing issues of nutrition, hygienic care, basic screening skills of main signs of illness and basic family planning issues. Additionally focused refurbishment of health institutions and specific procurement of required equipment will be part of the program.
